French Toast Recipe Ingredients
- White bread
Thickly sliced bread is the foundation of any French toast. Firm, dense, slightly stale slices absorb the custardy egg mixture better than thin, airy slices.
- Eggs
When it comes to French toast, eggs are essential. The proteins solidify once heated, holding the batter together and providing a rich texture. The fat provides additional creaminess.

- Milk
You can actually use any liquid for French toast, but milk is the most popular. Not only does milk provide the necessary moisture, but the fat also makes the dough extra rich. In this recipe, whole milk is used because it gives the ideal consistency. However, you can also use half-fat milk, cream, or your favorite milk alternative, with full-fat giving the creamiest consistency.
- Vanilla and cinnamon
The best French toast is warm, cozy, flavorful, and sweet. Cinnamon and vanilla are optional in this recipe, but we recommend using them to get the most delicious experience. If you feel like it, you can also add some nutmeg or sugar.
- Salt
Don’t skip the salt! Just a pinch won’t affect the flavor. Salt helps to break the eggs, incorporate them into the dough and prevent the finished product from having lumps.
- Butter
Like so many of the most decadent dishes, the best French toast is made with butter. If your French toast tends to burn, try frying the batter-soaked bread in a combination of butter and oil.
