Cooking the Classics: Moussaka Recipe Revealed 

Moussaka is a traditional Mediterranean dish that is popular in many countries, particularly Greece and Turkey. This hearty casserole is typically made with layers of sautéed eggplant, potatoes, and ground meat, all topped with a rich and creamy béchamel sauce.

To make moussaka, the eggplant and potatoes are sliced and lightly fried until tender, then layered with a spiced meat mixture made with ground lamb or beef, onions, garlic, and tomatoes. Once assembled, the casserole is baked until the top is golden brown and the flavors have melded together.

While the exact origins of moussaka are debated, it is believed to have been influenced by dishes from the Middle East and the Balkans. It has since become a beloved comfort food in many parts of the world and is often served at family gatherings and special occasions. 

Ingredients:

  • 2 large eggplants
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 cups of cooked ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons of dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup of ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons of breadcrumbs

Instructions :

Step-1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Step-2. Slice the eggplants into 1/4-inch thick slices and place them on a baking sheet. Brush the eggplant slices with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Step-3. Heat the remaining olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for about 5 minutes, until the onion is softened.
Step-4. Add the ground beef and cook for about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally and breaking up the beef with a spatula.
Step-5. Add the tomato paste, oregano, thyme, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt and pepper to the skillet. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Step-6. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the Parmesan cheese.
Step-7. In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, Greek yogurt, salt, and pepper.
Step-8. Spread the ground beef mixture in the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Step-9. Layer the eggplant slices over the beef.
Step-10. Spread the ricotta cheese mixture over the eggplant.
Step-11. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top.
Step-12. Bake for 25 minutes, until the top, is golden brown.
Step-13. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
